A wedge is driven between sisters Ümran and Umay in their youth when they both fall in love with Yıldırım, a handsome young doctor who comes to their village from Istanbul. Ümran sets her heart on him, but inspired by dreams of escaping to the big city Umay steals him away. With this bitterest of betrayals, their conflicting passions and ambition tear apart the bonds of sisterhood and send them on vastly different life journeys.

Hayat, whose name means life, is born of this betrayal and she is abandoned by her mother Umay who flees to Istanbul in pursuit of a new life, without so much as looking back. There she will have another daughter Hayal, which means dream. Back in the village, Ümran is left to bring up Hayat, blotting out her heartache with the duties of motherhood.

Ümran and Hayat eke out a life amid poverty in a small, nondescript village called Beyciler in central Anatolia. Her nemesis, the high society beauty Umay Karay carves out an opulent life in the glamorous heart of the Istanbul jet set with her daughter Hayal.

But immortal ties bind together these mothers and daughters and their paths are destined to cross despite the distance between their lives and dreams.

Hayat is a great fan of Umay Karay, whom she knows from the pages of celebrity magazines. But her life is far removed from such beauty and glamour, crushed under the dark shadow of her heartless, cruel Cemal, who she wrongly believes is her father. As his violence spirals, Ümran stabs the abusive Cemal in her desperate efforts to protect her daughter. The attack leaves Ümran facing a future in prison while Hayat is left to the mercy of Cemal.

Hayat’s greatest suffering now begins as Cemal chains her up in a dark, grim coal cellar.  For a year she suffers cruel torture. When police rescue from the cellar the whole of Turkey cries over her suffering as her story is splashed across the pages of national newspapers.

The weight of her dark past now comes tumbling down on Umay, threatening to shatter the sparkling world she has made for herself in Istanbul. Registered in official records as Hayat’s aunt, Umay finds herself obliged to take back into her life this girl whom she abandoned years ago to her older sister.

Hayat believes Umay, whom she long admired, is the aunt who she thought was dead. She now seeks to fit into her aunt’s glamorous life, but Ümran emerges from prison determined not to lose her daughter to Umay’s fantasy world. Living under the same roof for the sake of their children after so many years apart, Ümran and Umay are forced to take a huge test and deal with the unforgettable pain of past love as Yıldırım once again enters their lives.

Unaware that he is Hayat’s father, he finds his love for the two sisters coming back to life. Meanwhile, Hayat begins to feel herself falling in love with Volkan, Hayal’s hopeless platonic love. For both mothers and daughters history is repeating itself.

It is a time of reckoning for everyone. With each passing day, Hayat becomes crueler and within this new mesmerizing world while Hayal becomes a victim as Ümran did so many years before... The sibling daughters begin to hurt each other, Umay finds herself confronting an endless trial.
